What Our Clients Say
Gundjeihmi people have lived in Kakadu for many thousands of years.
When the sea levels rose and the shoreline was along the edge of the escarpment people lived in the rocky areas of the escarpment country, a unique part of Australia and the home of many unique plant and animals species. Through long periods of isolation as geological changes have shaped this part of Australia unique species, such as the Banded Fruit-Dove (Adjmu; Ptilinopus cinctus), the Oenpelli Python (Nawaran; Morelia oenpelliensis), the Black Wallaroo (Barrk, Macropus bernardus), have evolved in the area and are only found in the escarpment areas of Kakadu.
The Jim Jim creek system has become the wonderful floodplain resource over the last 6,000 years as the sea levels retreated and the freshwater system we see today has developed. Aboriginal ancestors of the current Murumburr landowners have lived through all these changes and developed a rich culture in the region. Their knowledge and culture are shared through the Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp and associated activities. We invite you to come and experience the wonderful feel of this country and take some time to understand the land and the culture that makes this area so special.
Our People
Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp lies on Murumburr clan country on the edge of the Jim Jim river system, approximately 60-70kms downstream of the world famous Jim Jim Falls.
Murumburr clan and affiliate families continue to live in the unique Kakadu National Parks, where culture and tradition still remains strong. The traditional land owners thrive on the many bush foods that the six different seasons bring.
With 7 different habitats, an abundance of foods is easily found. Knowledge of the seasons and food has been passed down through many generations of dahbohdabolk that have traveled the land. These ancestors have left the remnants of stone tools and artefacts which continue to be used today.
The Murumburr clan and our family members welcome you to come and have a taste of a real “living cultural experience”, and of their daily lives.
The Story of our logo, designed by Mandy Muir
Senior Custodian Murumburr Clan Mother Country
My Mother’s side Clan is Murumburr Clan.
Fathers side Clan is Wardaman Clan
Skin: Ngalgangyila
Moiety: Yirridja
Clan Country: Yellow Waters, Ngurrungurrudjba Region
Totem: Green Ants, Gaboh/White Cockatoo, Gnarradj
My logo is inspired by the land I’ve lived and grown up in central Kakadu, Murumburr Clan Country all my life. My Motherland mostly consists of the wetland surrounding Ngurrungurrudjba (Yellow Water) and the Jim Jim and South Alligator River systems, these wetlands and river systems flow through to the sea.
These wetlands are rich in food sources, of which the main food source is the Bamurru Magpie Goose, the most popular food source in the region that comes from our backyard.
Murumburr Clan are Gaboh (a part of the Green Ant People Group), the Green Ant captured in the artwork connects us to our very important role and responsibility to our Gaboh low-lying Country and people. This connection spans to the Gunwarddehwardde Stone Country of the Arnhem Land Plateau and our region beyond, north (gakbi), east (goyek), south (walem) and west (garrigad).
Magpie Goose, fish, Barramundi, bushtucker foods are also incorporated in the design. The water lily roots, Long-necked Turtle and water python represent our important connections to the wetlands and all its forms, water, plants and animals. This richness connects us to the other clans of the region, who have also lived and foraged in this area for that reason.
Our Magpie Goose eat the important food sources, the water chestnuts which fattens them up. Because of this, we are considered a rich clan, rich in bushtucker that is provided in just this one habitat.
Warramurrumundju Mother Earth Spirit carried the water chestnut seeds in her dilly bags and spread them across the lands from the sea, creating the wetlands that we look after and live on today, the traditional lands of our forefathers.
In Murumburr Country we have the Mother Earth Spirit that travels (you can see her in bottom right of artwork) and when she’s drawn, she’s carrying the dilly bags on her head. The dilly bags have seeds, these are the seeds of our First People and also the seeds of the water chestnut that sustains us and our food sources.
The water chestnut and seeds of our First People were thrown all the way coming from the sea, spreading throughout this landscape transforming what is now our wetlands today.
Warramurrumundju our Mother Earth creator and creator of our wetlands landscape now lies in the form of a rock formation on the edge of the floodplains on Murumburr Country.
Today we Gaboh remain the caretakers of her and the wetlands Country until the next generation take over.
Murumburr play an important role in the region because of that.
This artwork represents my strong connection to the wetlands Country, and our connections to the Gaboh people of the region. We are not the only Gaboh Clan but this story shows other clans strong connections to the Murumburr people of this wetland area.
Welcome to Murumburr Clan Country, the land where Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp is located.
